In honor of this being the first blog about Alyssa it is only right that I share her arrival journal! Nick was VERY diligent at the hospital keeping tabs on everything that occurred. He had his laptop out and typed out his version of what happened throughout our stay. I'll copy paste it below!! Enjoy!
3-30-10
1800 - Arrive at hospital. 5 minute wait in the lobby, maybe, then a nurse, Tonya, takes us to room 142. 1.5 hours of check-in paperwork.
1927 - Tonya introduces Kristie, who will be the nurse for the night. Kristie gives first dose of SideATech
2005 - Kristie back to Check BP, tells Chelle she can eat a light snack. Chelle asked for menu
2010 - Kristie Brings menu
2016 - First deep breath - good contraction - Chelle is upset when she finds I am actually keeping a log.
2020 - I had to erase the "a" from "Excellent Care Means...having a calm and responsive nurses"
2020 - Ordered room service. A fruit plate and a plain bagel with cream cheese.
2052 - Chelle just asked if she could read the log. I said no. She just opened an email from pregnancy magazine with the subject "This too shall pass" while having a contraction
2055 - Room service delivered. Bagel is warm. Strawberries aren’t so great, but the rest of the fruit is good, allegedly.
2056 - First F Bomb dropped, directed toward me. I shouldn’t laugh at her contractions I guess.
2107 - American Idol is a terrible program.
2113 - Kristie came in again. Said IV is done later. Sleeping pill is available until 11:30 or so. Chelle says pain is at a 4 or a 5 right now.
2128 - lost a contact, be right back.
2200 – Back. Had to run to house and get spare contacts, and bring my glasses.
2203 - Kristie in again to make Chelle sign a bunch of forms and reposition NST stuff.
2210 - Lights off, watching "Parenthood" now. Heartbeat is really loud on the monitor.
2225 - Opened the new earbuds for michelle, time to sleep.
2256 – Chelle up to pee again.
2334 - Kristie again. Holding off the next dose of sideatec because the contraction pattern is looking good. Check cervix again and it is still at 1 CM, but is a little thinner now. Saying 75%.
2345 - Kristie brought an Ambien and helped Chelle up to pee again.
3-31-10
0014 - Ambien Dream - I guess I told Michelle not to touch my dessert. Strawberry Parfait with cool whip on it does sound good though.
0210 - Kristie in again. Contractions have fallen off a little bit. Will monitor for 10 minutes, and reevaluate.
0220 - No change. Readjust NST equipment, will watch for another 5 minutes,
0234 - Kristie just left. Checked again, no change this time. Issued another dose of sideatech. Surrounded Chelle in pillows.
???? - New nurse come in to readjust all equipment and introduce herself. Too lazy to log it at the time, so I forgot....
0605 - Different nurse comes in (didnt catch name). Asks if she has been feeling contractions because they are not tracking on the monitor. Chelle says she has, but not certain about the consistency. Nurse decides it a good idea to give next dose of sideatech, goes to get pill. Michelle says that she would be more comfortable if she receives her IV soon.
0610 - Nurse comes back, but needs to run next door. Asks Michelle if she would like to take a shower. Chelle jumps in the shower, nurse tells her to make it quick, she needs to be on the monitor in no more than 10 minutes.
0622 - Nurse comes back in, lights back on in the room, and hooks NST back up.
0625 - Asks if she would like sideatech first or IV first. Chelle says sideatech first. Nurse gets ready to give it, and then changes her mind. Says there were two contractions right on top of each other, so she would rather get the IV in first.
0633 - IV stuff assembled, IV installed. Took some blood. Going to give sideatech at 7 AM if needed. May just start Potosin, going to monitor for 20 minutes in this position.
0645 - Order room service again. Same meal, Bagel with cream cheese and a fruit plate. Apple Juice to drink, but after the order Chelle realized the Apple Juice may not be the best idea...
0653 - Room service arrived. Fruit plate much weaker than last night's. Fat free cream cheese this time...
0712 - Mystery nurse back, her name is Erica. Her shift is ending, bring in the new nurse, Jan.
Jan checks Michelle. Calls it a "loose 1" and about 80% effaced. Contractions every 1-2 minutes. Will come back in 15 minutes or so to check BP. Left a hat in bathroom, and would like to check urine next time. Asks Michelle to stay on her side for the moment.
0745 - Kristie in to say goodbye. She had to go to patients in active labor through the night and had to assign another nurse (Erica) to Chelle..
0749 - Pee time. This time she has to wheel the IV cart in with her. Put the hat in the toilet.
0808 - Jan in to adjust NST and take urine. Says urine is concentrated, turns up iv to 300 for a few hours.
0823 - Jan in to take blood pressure. Chelle in decent pain, back is hurting. Jan came in when Chelle sat up, she had to sit up to cope with the pain. Laid back down on her side, reposition pillows, OK for now.
0834 - Had to figure out how to operate dvd player. Started Juno.
0850 - Grandma and Grandpa Lursen showed up.
0905 - Grandma and Grandpa Castle and Kyla showed up.
0930 - Jan in to ask pain level, Michelle said 7, maybe 5-6. Michelle asked for pain meds.
0940 - Dr Mills came in check in. Said she would be checked at 11. Possibly break her water
0942 - Grandma and Grandpa Castle went to the lounge.
0951 - Jan came in to administer pain meds into the IV.
1010 - Grandma and Grandpa Lursen head to the lounge.
1026 - Have to pee again. Have to call Jan this time to help, Jan had asked her to do that when she had to go.
1030 - I left to go home and take a shower, talk to Rudy.
1115 - Got back to the room, Chelle was in the restroom.
1120 - Jan checked her again. 1.5 CM, 90% effaced. Mills will be in at 1 PM, possibly break the water then. Pitossin started, starting low, and will up it every half hour.
1150 - Leave to get a bite for lunch.
1235 - Back from lunch. Contractions really hurting now. Cindy rubbing Michelle’s back, but allegedly it doesn’t feel as good now that her hands are no longer cold.
1249 - A different nurse in since Jan is at lunch. Helps Chelle to the restroom. Just checks positioning of NST, all is good.
1251 - Dr Mills in and wants to break the water. Checks her in the process, and she is at 3-maybe 4 CM. Going to call the epidural people in, we need to clean the bedside table off.
1335 - Epidural is now in place. Dr U'Cannon did the procedure. Chelle surprisingly sat completely still the entire time. Took longer than I expected, but it went according to plan. Jan wants her to lay flat on her back for 15 minutes or so, then they will come in and turn her from side to side. Jan told michelle she just had a contraction, and Chelle Didnt even really feel it. She can still feel her legs, but they’re tingly. All of this, and the medicine has been flowing for 3 minutes or so...
1345 - Michelle loves the epidural. Why would you not do it this way?
1350 - Tonya stops by to say hi, Michelle misses her. Cindy jokingly asks if she should make arrangements to get Jan reassigned.
1352 - Jan changes batteries in the new pump finally.
1353 - Michelle still loves the epidural.
1413 - Jan back in to insert the catheter. Gets that done, and checks Alyssa again. At 7CM now. heading out to the car to get the other laptop for Cindy.
1521 – Chelle feeding Alyssa. What the heck just happened? I headed out to the car to get the other laptop for Cindy, and decided to stop to talk to grandma and grandma Castle in the lounge, and grandpa Lursen comes running down the hall telling me to get back in there or I'll miss it. Into room, Chelle pushes 3 times, and they have her stop and wait for Dr. Mills. 2 more pushes after Dr Mills gets here, and Alyssa is out, crying, and happy! Right now, everyone has left the room. In the delivery room with Chelle and me were Dr Mills, Both Grandmas, an assistant named Chad, and another nurse.
1604 - Grandpas just got to come in and hold Alyssa. Plenty of pictures! 19" long, apgar score is 9 and 9. blood sugar 195, all looking good.
1645 - Grand parents are gone. Karen, Dee, and Cindy just came by to see baby and momma. They just left too. Chelle is giving Alyssa another feeding right now. They tell us we are going to be moving rooms very soon. Momma just ate a grilled cheese, "nasty" chicken noodle soup with peas in it, and another fruit plate where they got the strawberries correct this time. The IV is still in, the hood is still down in the room, and there are still some messes spread throughout the room, but everything is finally peaceful except the sound of the IV pumps, the sound of Alyssa feeding, and my typing on these keys...
1728 - Just got settled into our new room, number 171. Alyssa left with our new nurse Trish, who also has an Alyssa(named after the angel in the woods on the little house on the prairie). Alyssa is going to get her bath at the nursery.
1749 - Trish just had Chelle sign more paperwork, and handed a ton of information in a packet.
1756 - Leann (lactation consultant) just popped in. Went over some basics. Will come back when baby is back.
1759 - A lady came in to have us do the birth certificate work. All she needed was the name. In and out in 30 seconds tops.
1804 - Alyssa is back! And hungry, apparently. They will have Leann come back so she can get a quality meal.
1820 - Just finished feeding again, mom burping her now.
1830 - Birth certificate lady came back had me verify everything. It was all correct. Signed off, she gave us a temp cert for insurance purposes.
1858 - Just held Alyssa for 20 minutes, back sleeping on moms chest again.
1903 - Kathy and Bailey just showed up to meet Alyssa. Got lotsa pictures of Bailey holding her.
1915 - New nurse Angela just showed up and got the run down from Trish.
1940 - Order room service - chefs salad for me, hearty mac and cheese and a brownie for chelle.
1950 - Kathy and Bailey left, feeding again, starting on left side. A little more trouble this time, and Alyssa is NOT happy. Call the nurse in. By the time nurse came in, she had latched on.
2003 - Room service has arrived, Alyssa napping on Chelles chest again.
2020 - Chelle went to restroom. numbing spray this time. Alyssa laying down on her back in her crib, screaming the entire time. Calms down for a few seconds at a time when I rub her head and when she is grabbing my fingers
2025 - Auntie Windsey arrives with flowers and a balloon. Alyssa is happy as can be. She is looking all over the place, not crying a bit.
2040 - Nurse Angela comes in to check up. 134/85 BP. Chelle told her her feet were swelling, Angela says thats normal for a week or so.
2100 - Americal Idol is on again.....:(
2108 - Auntie Windsey headed out. Alyssa asleep again in moms arms.
2132 - Feeding again, right side, false alarm, she wouldnt eat...
2215 - Attempting feeding again, right side, Alyssa too tired and shes not doing anything.
2223 - Wrapped Alyssa back up, laid her in bed. try to catch a little sleep.
2240 - Shes crying, making her noises. Get her out of bed, and Chelle gets her to eat a little on the right side.
2300 - Angela asks if we want to take her to nursery for a bit. We say yes, get a little sleep
4-1-10
0130 - Bring Alyssa back. Angela helps get her started with her feeding.
0320 - Still trying to feed. Mom just asked for some nursing formula, Alyssa isn’t taking to mom real well. Nurse says not to give her more than 20 CCs. At least she is drinking right away on the bottle.
0345 - Angela checks back in, takes Alyssa back to nursery so we can get some sleep, she is sound asleep right now after her meal.
0600 - lab tech just left after taking 11 vials of blood. Obviously, Chelle got light headed, but the nurse brought her a sierra mist, some OJ and some graham crackers. Small misunderstanding, when chelle hit the call light, she said she was light headed and needed a pop. Angela thought she passed a clot. Not sure if that is good or bad or otherwise... anyways, feeling better a minute later. Angela also said that Alyssa is still asleep in the nursery.
0610 - Another trip to the restroom. They aren’t as frequent anymore!
0720 - Shift change. Lynette is now our nurse. Alyssa is still asleep, they said.
0742 - Trip to restroom. Brush teeth - wonderful, i guess.
0758 – Dr. Harting just came by. She checked Alyssa out in the nursery. She said the nurse had asked her to look at her left hip, but she didn’t notice anything. A little darkening birthmark on her chest. She is kind of spitty, but she thinks that is because of the fast delivery. Said it could take 2-3 days to really start the breastfeeding process and get it in sync between mom and baby.
0800 - Michelle just showed me her "good" nipple. Ouch.
0805 - Go down and get Alyssa from the nursery.
0825 - Kelly and Harper just stopped by to meet Alyssa. Harper made a picture for us, and got her picture taken holding Alyssa.
0838 - Tag teamed a change after Alyssa spit up all over her swaddle and undershirt.
0844 - Just told aunt Kyla that Alyssa has 6 toes on one foot as an April fool’s joke.
0920 - Things are so fast! Dr. Mills rounds nurse came in to check up. Lynette in again to check epidural site and stitching. Recommends we talk to lactation consultant (Kathy, today) again about the nips. photographer came in, schedule appointment for 10 am tomorrow. Nurse in training, and her instructor Amy in to check reflexes of Chelle, and rate the feet swelling at 1. BP still normal.
0946 - Breakfast time. Chelle just got her rogam shot, Alyssa has been asleep on my lap for 45 minutes, but finally starting to fuss a little.
1007 - just changed a diaper full of Poop! More poop and pee came out while the diaper was off. Luckily mom knows what she is doing...
1013 - Feeding on the right side, shes wide awake, and actually eating this time.
1042 - Kelly just called and told the story of Harper being shocked that babys sometimes come out of your "Hoopy Doopy".
1102 - Jill from the Womens Health Center stopped by to explain the same thing we have heard 14 times.
1133 - Mom and Baby both napping. Alyssa in her crib with her bow on.
1100 - Audiologist came and took Alyssa, yes she had red scrubs and a green badge.
1135 - Audiologist brings her back. Says she passes just fine. Also said she was a bit warm, and left her unswaddled for a bit.
1138 - Eric Fanning showed up and held Alyssa for a bit.
1300 - Our VIP meal showed up. Chelle got a steak, medium, with baked tater and veggies. I got a steak, medium well, with veggies and green beans. Chelle raved about the roll, but I didn’t have one. As soon as i got all of Chelles food on the table, and the table rolled to her in bed, Alyssa started crying. Had to hold her and rock her until Chelle was done. After she was done, Alyssa rested OK in her own bed.
1330 - Lactation consultant Kathy showed up to look at the nips. Decided to give Michelle some nipple shields. She left to go get them, came back, and Chelle was feeding on the left side and rated her pain a 0 when using the nipple shield. Kathy said that she was going to start us on pumping today to help the milk flow, and was going to give us some more information on the nipple shields.
1401 - on the left side, Chelle can hear her drinking. Says its a huge relief to her when she can actually hear her swallowing.
1449 - Jason and Amanda just left. They came to meet Alyssa on their way to the funeral home for the viewing of one of our fellow hockey players, Andrew Brandon.
1500 - Gma and Gpa Lursen just got here again.
1508 - Uncle Larry showed up. got to hold Alyssa for a while.
1530 - Lynette in again to check up on Alyssa. Temp was 98%. Everything else good.
1535 - Uncle Ryan and Liz are here!!
1600 - Head home for a shower.
1700 - Come back, and Alyssa is eating again. Lactation consultant is helping mom again, and Alyssa is doing really well. says she is going to come back to help learn how to use the pump.
2040 - Things got a little chaotic for a while. Gma and gpa Castle and great gma Ratliff showed up right as we need to feed Alyssa. They had to wait a bit while Michelle fed her, then learned more about the pump. Lynette checked baby and Michelle, all is good. Alyssa had another BM, but Lynette cleaned this one up. after all that settled down, bring everyone back into the room. Great gma Ratliff loved it! said the 4 most beautiful babies she has ever seen were all in the room. Shortly after that, Chad and Tera showed up and brought Kelsie and Keaton with them. Room got a little crowded, so decided to go to dinner with mom, dad, kyla, and gma Ratliff.
Good dinner had chicken wings at Logan’s. Got back to the room and Ryan and Liz are still here watching the office with Chelle. Chelle was in the bathroom when I got back, but I grabbed her a brownie off the dessert cart. Settling in while we watch the office, and Liz holds Alyssa.
2051 - Try to start the checklist we need done. Chelle won’t let me talk to her now. Says it hurts to talk, but cried when i told her to talk to the nurse about it.
2058 - Chelle asked for the checklist. I guess she'll take care of filling it out.
2104 - Uncle Ryan and Liz just left because its feeding time again. Clean off the nipple guard and Chelle starts trying to feed her. The office episode about having the baby is on tv. Having pretty good luck feeding her this time.
2122 - Angela in to record that the feeding is occurring.
2140 - Angela back to help setup the breast pump again. Begin the process
2150 - Pumping finished for now. I held Alyssa while Chelle was pumping, and when she was done, i watched her struggle to control all of her pumping tools and get them to the sink
2204 - after 10 minutes or so of watching her give all the signs of hunger to me, Chelle has to try feeding her again. she immediately latches onto the left breast
2216 - Chelle burping Alyssa now, who seems sound asleep on Chelles chest now. Chelle said that during shift change today at 1900, the nurses mentioned something about Alyssa having a "hip click". not really sure what that means, but Dr. Harting did mention her hip this morning too.
2255 - Alyssa been pretty upset now since her last nap on Chelles chest. Will settle after rocking her for 10 minutes or so, but 2 minutes after putting her in the crib, she is MAD. Chelle is calming her now, hopefully she will sleep after this.
2315 - Chelle decides to try to feed her again. Fed 10 minutes or so from the left. Sleeping now.
2318 - Angela comes in, and asks if they can take Alyssa to nursery. Are going to keep her until she needs fed again.
4-2-10
0125 - Angela brings Alyssa back, she is hungry. Wash off nipple shield and give to Chelle. While feeding, she can smell a poopy diaper. Angela says that she checked it when they came out of the nursery, so it must be brand new. Angela leaves to allow Chelle to feed. Starts on the right.
0148 - Break to change poopy diaper, and then attach on the left. She takes about 10 minutes or so, then mom is patting her back while she lays on moms chest. Eyes wide open and looking around, lifting her head and going side to side. So strong...
0430 - Nurse brought Alyssa back hungry again. Great feeding session this time, both sides, plenty to eat, sound asleep an hour later and back in the crib.
0540 - lab tech comes in again, this time its for jaundice check for Alyssa. She sticks her heel and Alyssa didn’t like that at all, but a pacifier calmed her back down.
0546 - Angela came back in and checked on Michelle. Chelle asked if she could take a shower, and Angela said anytime. So Chelle ordered some room service, and hopped in the shower.
0645 – Feeding again
0710 - Done feeding, Michelle made note of her completely round nipple. Change wet diaper. Nurses come in for shift change while changing. after the change, Alyssa is upset, but calms back down quickly when swaddled and Chelle holds her for a little. Big farts from Alyssa.
0851 - Rounding nurse for Dr Mills came by to check on everyone. Just before that Kathy came by to check on how the breastfeeding was going. Everything is great. Before that, Chelle took a long nap and Alyssa and I hung out on the rocking chair for a bit before putting her back down into her crib for 15 minutes or so.
0856 - Nursing assistant comes by to check vitals on mom and baby. Mom has 98.8 temp, good BP. baby completely perfect.
0910 - Feeding time again.
1033 - Just got back from photographer, and Alyssa is HUNGRY! Going to finish up our checklists so we can start our way home.
1051 - Lynette in to check Alyssa. Changed her wet diaper at the same time. Alyssa sound asleep in her crib.
1055 - Begin packing for the trip home. Feels like we are going home from vacation.
1124 - Room service showed up. Fettuccini penne pasta, a fruit plate and a veggie plate.
1155 - Feeding time. Had to itch mom's face for her...
1404 - Been back from lunch for a while. Went upstairs and rented the pump. While I was gone, Dr. Harting came in and checked up on Alyssa again. Said everything was great, including the hip. Dr. Kennedy came in to look at mom, and said everything is good. been sitting here with nothing to update, Alyssa has just been sleeping. we are patiently waiting for Alyssa’s last blood test so we can go home.
1510 - just changed 2 very full diapers in 25 minutes. one before a feeding, and one after. Nurse in now checking on Alyssa, and the lab tech (Kristen) is waiting on her to finish up. Unfortunately, Lynette bumped her arm at the last patient, and they are band-aiding up her arm. Lab tech takes her labs, and leaves. Nurse Karen came in right before they started, and waited patiently for them to finish so she could hold Alyssa. Nurse getting discharge papers around, and we are packing up the room, so going to shut the computer down now.
